Meta speeds up new app development with artificial intelligence assistance
Meta is leveraging large language models to accelerate the development and deployment of new applications. During its second-quarter earnings presentation, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company has multiple new products in development, following recent launches of dedicated versions for Marketplace sellers, Facebook Groups administrators, and a new Instagram photo application.
The company credits LLMs with transforming its development process, enabling the testing of new concepts at significantly faster speeds than previously possible. Zuckerberg expressed confidence about artificial intelligence's impact on team productivity, specifically highlighting Threads — which has reached 500 million monthly active users — as evidence of this new development approach's potential.
Threads' success illustrates Meta's implementation of LLM-powered recommendation systems. According to CFO Susan Li, language models substantially enhance existing algorithms by better understanding content and generating superior training data. Meta revealed that all Instagram Reels and Feed posts now undergo automatic processing through LLMs for topic and tone analysis.
This approach differs markedly from Meta's previous initiatives, including Creative Labs and the NPE Team program, which failed to produce major successes. Zuckerberg indicated that new consumer products will launch soon, suggesting Meta intends to expand this AI-assisted development model further.
