New platform coordinates large-scale philanthropic funding
Oliver Habryka introduced Lightcone Commons, a new funding platform designed to streamline coordination of large-scale charitable initiatives. The platform expects to distribute approximately $20 million in grants during its first round.
Lightcone Commons employs the S-Process, a mechanism developed and refined through the Survival and Flourishing Fund. The system operates through value curves, where each funder defines how much they value marginal contributions to various organizations and takes turns selecting their highest-value funding opportunities. Evaluators receive a 2% fee on funds they manage, while the platform charges 3%.
Any nonprofit, for-profit entity, or individual may apply. Applications for the first round close on August 23, 2026, with recommendations expected around October 23, 2026. A second funding round is anticipated to conclude in January 2027.
The initiative addresses a significant challenge: large amounts of new philanthropic capital are entering the ecosystem, including from individuals benefiting from Anthropic and OpenAI IPOs. According to Habryka, many wealthy donors struggle to deploy substantial sums effectively. Evaluating high-quality opportunities is difficult, information about applicants remains scattered, and most philanthropists fail to distribute capital efficiently.
