Nissan has deployed an AI-powered camera system at its Canton, Mississippi plant to monitor worker body movements and detect unsafe postures. The technology flags instances when employees bend beyond safety limits or hold problematic positions for extended periods, enabling supervisors to coach workers and redesign workstations. The company reports the system has generated approximately $34 million in safety and health-related savings by reducing repetitive strain injuries and improving worker training efficiency. While initially developed to boost manufacturing output and train new employees, the system's ergonomic safety benefits emerged as its primary advantage. Nissan plans to expand deployment to its Smyrna, Tennessee facility and evaluate applications across other plants. Workers initially concerned about job security became more accepting after the company positioned the system as a safety and training tool rather than a surveillance mechanism.
