NTT DATA Group, a global IT services company headquartered in Japan, underwent a significant transformation in how it operates, shifting from a traditional growth model based on expanding headcount to one centered on creating value through artificial intelligence. This strategic pivot reflects the broader evolution companies must undertake as AI continues to reshape the business landscape. As part of this comprehensive transformation, the company established a global strategic partnership with OpenAI in May 2025 and deployed ChatGPT Enterprise across the entire organization. The rollout proved remarkably successful, with over 96% of respondents satisfied with the tool and more than 95% reporting productivity improvements. The company established an internal OpenAI Center of Excellence to manage license distribution, technical validation, training initiatives, and usage monitoring across the enterprise. Building on this consolidated foundation, NTT DATA Group expanded access to Codex to approximately 9,000 employees across both technical and non-technical roles. One of the first major successes demonstrated Codex's distinctive capabilities through automation of a complex incident analysis for a critical system—a task that previously required five experienced engineers and three days of intensive work was completed in just 30 minutes. Codex's ability to independently investigate, execute, test, and revise based on instructions—operating as an autonomous agent rather than simply a coding assistant—generated significant enthusiasm among senior leadership. Beyond software development, Codex is being used by non-technical staff for diverse applications including building lightweight applications, organizing large file collections, analyzing spreadsheet data, summarizing documents, and automating repetitive processes. Concrete examples include automatically extracting transportation expenses from credit card statements and transferring them into travel expense forms, or creating analytical reports directly from raw data without requiring specialized business intelligence tools or skilled engineers. The company established comprehensive security guidelines and governance frameworks, clarifying what data can be used, which systems Codex can access, how network traffic is managed, appropriate automation levels, and where human review is required. This foundation of trust and security enabled users throughout the organization to confidently explore new applications. Through its Client Zero approach, treating its own organization as the first customer, NTT DATA Group aims to amplify employee capabilities through human-AI collaboration, generating greater organizational value and efficiency.
