Nvidia announced a $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy, the energy company developing infrastructure for OpenAI's data center near Cincinnati, Ohio. The chipmaker will serve as the exclusive supplier of compute infrastructure and provide up to $105 billion in credit to support the facility's construction and operation. The project is one of the world's largest data center initiatives, with potential total costs reaching $500 billion. SB Energy, which counts SoftBank and OpenAI among its investors, will construct a 9.2 gigawatt natural gas power plant on the site, a facility expected to cost approximately $33 billion. The location, owned by the U.S. Department of Energy, historically served as a uranium enrichment facility for the nation's nuclear weapons program. The data center will begin at 4.25 gigawatts of capacity and can scale to 8 gigawatts. The rising costs of energy infrastructure, which have increased 66 percent in the past two years, underscore the significant investment required to meet growing demands for AI computing power.
