Nvidia announced a $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy, the data center developer partnering with OpenAI and SoftBank on the Ports-Pike project near Cincinnati, Ohio. The investment solidifies Nvidia's position as the sole supplier of computing infrastructure for the facility. Additionally, Nvidia committed to providing up to $105 billion in credit to support construction, with plans to scale the data center from an initial 4.25 gigawatts to 8 gigawatts. SB Energy plans to build a 9.2 gigawatt natural gas power plant on land owned by the U.S. Department of Energy. The site has historical significance, as it was previously used for uranium enrichment for the U.S. nuclear program and submarine production. The power plant is expected to cost $33 billion, reflecting the substantial rise in construction expenses for such facilities, which have increased 66% over the past two years. The massive expansion of power generation comes with economic implications. Once operational, the SB Energy power plant and similar facilities will compete with export markets for natural gas supplies, potentially tripling natural gas prices in certain regions of the country.
