Nvidia Engineer Wants AI Data Centers to Disappear from View

A senior energy systems engineer at Nvidia, who previously spent 25 years at Microsoft designing data centers, argues that AI infrastructure should evolve to become invisible like electrical substations — mature infrastructure that demands no attention. Currently, AI data centers face significant challenges: high energy consumption, water use, noise, pollution, and grid stability impacts. A recent NERC Level 3 alert highlighted that when AI data centers disconnect over 1,000 megawatts from the grid, the system becomes unstable. The engineer's goal is to make data centers more efficient, modular, and invisible, transforming what today is controversial into mundane infrastructure.
