OpenAI has made significant progress in its efforts to integrate ChatGPT into everyday computer use, allowing the AI to perform tasks across various applications and web browsers. The company has launched a Chrome extension, cloud and in-app browsers, and enhanced its Codex coding tool with Computer Use capabilities. These tools enable ChatGPT to interact with public websites and complete tasks on other apps. OpenAI's president, Greg Brockman, stated that an April update made the technology accessible to anyone who uses a computer, not just developers. Employees at OpenAI noted that while there is still room for improvement, the tools have reached an inflection point. Rival Anthropic was the first to market with its Claude Cowork feature, which was used by at least 600,000 organizations by May 2026. OpenAI claims its technology has caught up and is now being integrated into ChatGPT to automate computer tasks, with the goal of making users rely more on the AI for their work. Ari Weinstein, a manager on OpenAI's Computer Use team, told Business Insider that once ChatGPT can perform tasks faster than humans, it will change how people interact with their computers.
