OpenAI launches ChatGPT desktop app for Linux

OpenAISource: TechCrunch - AI11/08/2026, 16:15
OpenAI has launched a dedicated ChatGPT desktop application for Linux, responding to repeated requests from the developer community. The new application, available in preview, allows Linux users to use ChatGPT, ChatGPT Work, and Codex across various distributions. The launch is global as of this week. OpenAI supports distributions including desktop variants of Ubuntu 24.04 and 26.04 LTS, Debian 13, and Fedora 43 and 44. While the Linux community comprises hundreds of distributions, those chosen by OpenAI serve as a base for various 'downstream' distributions, which should also be compatible. This launch follows Anthropic's release of a Claude desktop app for Linux about a month ago.
