Following multiple lawsuits regarding AI chatbot safety concerns linked to teen mental health issues, OpenAI has unveiled a specialized version of its platform for young users. The new offering includes Study Mode, which provides guided questions and step-by-step explanations to promote learning rather than quick answers, along with tools that detect potential cheating attempts and redirect users toward educational resources.
Parental controls allow guardians to manage access, set usage schedules, and receive safety alerts. The company also partnered with CodeAI to help teens understand how AI systems work and how to use them responsibly.
However, critics question how easily teenagers might bypass these safeguards, and raise concerns about why comprehensive safety measures were not implemented when ChatGPT first launched in 2022, before it reached 900 million weekly users.
