An analysis of state legal documents and local news reports points to growing public opposition to the construction of artificial intelligence data centers across the US. The number of municipal ordinances banning new data centers surged to over 500 in July 2026, compared to 300 in June. More than 70% of Americans expressed opposition to the installation of these facilities. Primary concerns include noise from continuous operations, rising water and electricity costs, and environmental impact. Most bans were issued in July in southern states such as Georgia and Florida, while governors of New York, Massachusetts, and Nebraska implemented additional restrictions or suspended tax benefits for developers.
