Record Number of AI Startups Reach Unicorn Status in First Half of 2026
A total of 195 companies achieved unicorn status in the first half of 2026, already surpassing the entire count for 2025 and marking a significant shift toward AI-focused ventures. Robotics and AI neolabs led as the primary sectors for new unicorn formations, alongside healthcare, biotech, AI infrastructure, AI deployment and semiconductor companies. The new cohort added approximately $440 billion in value to the unicorn board, representing 5% of its total valuation. China-based open-source model developer DeepSeek emerged as the most valuable new unicorn, securing a $50 billion valuation in its first external financing round, while Seychelles-based crypto exchange OKX ranked second at $25 billion. Among the first-half cohort, four companies achieved decacorn status and another five reached valuations above $5 billion, reflecting robust investor appetite for AI infrastructure and innovation.
