Samsung engineers defect to SK Hynix in accelerating talent exodus

Samsung's semiconductor engineers are leaving the company in significant numbers to join rival SK Hynix, attracted by substantially higher bonuses. SK Hynix offers approximately $476,000 in annual bonuses to employees, while engineers in Samsung's foundry division receive only $135,000. The disparity reflects SK Hynix's commanding position in high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips, critical components that power Nvidia's AI accelerators. A strategic reversal underpins this dynamic. In 2019, Samsung reduced its HBM investments, betting the technology would remain niche, while SK Hynix doubled down on the sector. The artificial intelligence boom inverted their fortunes: SK Hynix now leads the global HBM market, while Samsung lags. In June, SK Hynix briefly surpassed Samsung as South Korea's most valuable company. Both companies are accelerating their talent acquisition efforts. SK Hynix added 2,152 employees in the first half of 2026 and aims to double its production capacity within five years. Samsung plans to hire 60,000 workers over the next five years, particularly for semiconductors. Yet South Korea's semiconductor industry faces an estimated shortage of 54,000 workers by 2031. The talent exodus threatens Samsung's core strategic advantage: it is the only memory manufacturer with an integrated foundry division, essential for next-generation HBM production. Samsung has already secured a court injunction against two former engineers, prohibiting them from working at SK Hynix for 18 months.
