Shopify Reports AI Search Driving Revenue Growth Without Cannibalizing Google Search
E-commerce platform Shopify reported that AI-driven traffic and orders to its stores tripled year-over-year in the second quarter, contributing to the company's earnings beat and strong revenue growth. President Harley Finkelstein stated that AI has become a complement to traditional search rather than a replacement, particularly benefiting smaller merchants that comprise the majority of Shopify's customer base. Unlike AI's impact on online publishing where AI summaries reduce click-through rates, Shopify found AI beneficial to its business. Traditional search sessions remain robust, growing 1.3x over the past two years and accounting for roughly a third of all storefront sessions. AI agents achieve better search results by understanding buyer intent across multiple dimensions rather than just keywords, leading to faster conversions and direct product page visits. The company reported Q2 revenue of $3.6 billion, up 36% year-over-year and exceeding Wall Street expectations of $3.4 billion. Shopify has built connectors to major AI tools including Claude, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, with vibe-coding platforms like Lovable enabling merchants to build on the platform.
