SK Hynix announces $38 billion investment in new memory chip plants
SK Hynix announced a 54 trillion won ($38.1 billion) investment to build two new memory chip manufacturing facilities, responding to growing demand driven by AI infrastructure development. The investment includes 35.2 trillion won for the Y2 factory in Yongin, focused on DRAM and high-bandwidth memory (HBM), and 19.1 trillion won for the M17 facility in Cheongju, dedicated to NAND memory. Yongin Y2 construction will begin in July 2027 and become operational in June 2029, while Cheongju M17 will start in February 2027 and open in December 2028. The move reflects SK Hynix's strategy to secure adequate supply volume amid intense competition with Samsung and Micron.
