Spotify introduces AI persona labeling to exclude synthetic artists from recommendations

Spotify announced plans to label and exclude AI-generated artists from its personalized recommendation algorithm starting in September. The music streaming platform will create an "AI persona" label that appears on artist profiles and track listings, visually distinguishing synthetic performers from human musicians. The move aims to prevent listeners from unknowingly consuming AI-generated content and protects legitimate artists from losing streams to artificial rivals. Spotify will identify AI personas through a combination of human review and AI investigative tools, rather than relying solely on self-disclosure from music creators. The company revealed that it had removed 75 million spam tracks over a 12-month period as AI tools flooded its platform with fake music—representing a significant proportion of its legitimate catalogue of 100 million tracks. Artists creating under AI personas will be permitted to self-identify, but Spotify emphasized that listeners want assurance of authenticity, particularly in an era when deepfakes and synthetic identities can easily masquerade as legitimate performers.
