Record Labels Move to Exclude AI-Generated Music from International Charts

The world's three largest record label groups - Universal Music Group, Sony Music, and Warner Music Group - have unveiled a proposal designed to prevent AI-generated music from appearing on international charts. This initiative represents a significant escalation beyond earlier efforts by industry bodies focused on creating standardized labeling for AI-generated and AI-assisted content.
Under the labels' proposal, songs would be required to carry clear identification of their AI involvement, but more importantly, they would be barred from international charts unless they met specific criteria. Most notably, music would need to be "substantially human" in creation to qualify for chart eligibility. This effectively creates a gatekeeping mechanism that prioritizes human creativity in the commercial music landscape.
The proposal follows earlier standardization attempts by the RIAA, International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), SAG-AFTRA, and others, which focused on transparent labeling of AI-generated and AI-assisted music. While those initiatives aimed to inform audiences through standardized labels, the major labels' proposal takes a more restrictive approach, implementing hard barriers that would prevent purely algorithmic content from competing on the industry's most visible platforms.
