Top Google AI Scientists Found Discovery Loop to Automate Scientific Discovery

Four of Google's most senior artificial intelligence researchers have left the company to found Discovery Loop, a startup focused on automating scientific and engineering discovery. The founders—Jeff Dean and Sanjay Ghemawat, who helped build Google's computing infrastructure, plus Oriol Vinyals and Quoc Le, both prominent figures in Google's AI research—plan to create autonomous systems that propose, execute, and evaluate experiments. The company will initially target improvements to machine learning algorithms before expanding into domains such as chip design, biology, drug discovery, and materials science. Although Google will retain an ownership stake, the departure of these prominent researchers marks a setback for the search giant's efforts to maintain its competitive edge in AI model development. The founders said they conceived of the idea just weeks before the official launch.
