Transfer Learning from Office Work Improves Software Engineering Capabilities

A research team demonstrates that post-training a machine learning model on office work tasks—including spreadsheets, documents, and common tools—yields significant gains in software engineering performance. The model improved by 5.8 percentage points on the SWE-Bench Pro benchmark despite training on only a few hundred office work examples. The researchers attribute this advancement to transfer learning of goal-directed execution capabilities: forming appropriate local objectives, building accurate environmental models, maintaining fidelity to high-level goals, and verifying goal achievement. These skills acquired through office work translate directly to more effective software engineering.
