UK datacenters shift toward regions as AI infrastructure expands beyond London
Britain's datacenter infrastructure is undergoing a significant geographic shift, with regions outside London gaining ground in AI compute capacity. A recent analysis identifies 555 server facilities across the UK, with London still dominant at 40% of the total and two-thirds of overall capacity. However, the South East is already planning ten new projects with 128 MW of additional capacity, while the North West has five developments scheduled. The North East will see the largest transformation, with Blackstone planning a 720 MW facility near Blyth. OpenAI, meanwhile, has temporarily paused its Stargate project in North Tyneside, citing high energy costs in the UK as a factor.
