Vandalism of Surveillance Cameras Halts AI Safety Advocate's Activism

Steve Eimers, an online advocate known for raising safety concerns about highway guardrails, expanded his activism to challenge automatic license plate reader (ALPR) technology deployed by Flock and Axon. After discovering severe damage to cameras he had documented in public posts, Eimers suspended all ALPR-related advocacy work indefinitely. ALPR cameras use computer vision to capture and record vehicle data for crime tracking and suspect identification. Eimers argued that numerous installations posed safety risks—cameras mounted too close to guardrails compromised crash safety functionality, while placement on existing road signs interfered with breakaway mechanisms. His content resonated with privacy advocates, though comments increasingly advocated for camera destruction. On July 25, Eimers observed two Flock cameras he had previously publicized showing severe damage. Following police investigation, a suspect was arrested on July 31 and charged with felony vandalism. The escalating hostility and explicit vandalism suggestions in online comments prompted Eimers to cease his advocacy activities.
