Anthropic has advocated for mechanisms to moderate the pace of AI development when necessary, yet a fundamental obstacle persists: no laboratory can verify what competitors are actually building or training, creating a dynamics where slowing down feels too risky. The solution may lie in verification technologies modelled on Cold War precedents. Just as satellites and monitoring systems allowed nuclear adversaries to trust verification over blind faith, researchers are now developing cryptographic systems to confirm whether AI labs comply with agreed standards. Teams including Lucid Computing and researcher Kristian Ronn are pioneering these approaches. Technology alone cannot resolve the problem, but credible verification mechanisms could transform calls to slow the AI race from rhetoric into tangible governance. Broader participation from researchers and organizations is needed to make this viable.
