Walmart Employees Get New Responsibility: Correcting AI System Errors
Walmart is significantly investing in artificial intelligence and providing new tools and training to thousands of frontline employees. However, implementing this technology has created unforeseen challenges: beyond their conventional tasks, workers now need to correct errors made by AI systems.
Employees have been voicing concerns on social media about the difficulties. On forums like Reddit, reports indicate problems ranging from confusing security alerts to questions about how AI evaluates employee performance. A human resources manager described the system as expecting perfection in every employee action.
In the e-commerce area, employees struggle to maintain product-picking speed as planned by the AI, mainly because the routes suggested by the system force inefficient movement through the store. Meanwhile, drivers for the Spark delivery service report that the Smart Path feature frequently orders them to collect frozen products at the start of the route, resulting in unwanted thawing before delivery.
The security monitoring system also creates confusion, as it is still learning to interpret data from cameras and sensors. Employees frequently receive alerts that require correction and additional context. A Walmart executive stated that the tools were created to help employees, not to penalize them, leaving the final decision in the workers' hands.
