WindBorne Systems raises $37 million to scale AI-powered weather forecasting

Weather data startup WindBorne Systems has closed a $37 million Series B funding round co-led by Khosla Ventures and Galvanize, valuing the company at $250 million. The company uses AI weather models fed by data collected from its proprietary fleet of long-endurance weather balloons deployed at 20 launch sites globally, with approximately 600 balloons in the air at any given time. WindBorne's AI forecasts already serve government agencies including the U.S. National Weather Service, Air Force, and Navy. The new funding will support commercial expansion, with focus on investment funds using weather data for commodity price prediction, as well as infrastructure improvements including replacing satellite communications with mesh radio networks.
