Nuance, a Seattle-based startup, has raised $50 million in Series A funding to develop AI models that can engage in more natural, emotionally intelligent conversations. The round, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, also includes participation from Accel, Nvidia's NVentures, and other investors. The company, founded last year, previously secured a $10 million seed round in July 2025. Fangchang Ma, Nuance's cofounder and CEO, explained that current AI avatars lack the ability to react authentically during conversations, often resulting in awkward pauses and missed nuances. Ma, along with his former Apple colleagues, aims to create a unified system that processes audio and video inputs and outputs seamlessly. The startup plans to release a research preview of its model later this year. It intends to target businesses with use cases such as AI interviewers and customer support representatives. Ma emphasized the need for high-quality, in-house data to train the models, highlighting the importance of natural, unscripted interactions.
