NVIDIA and Cisco launch first 400gbps per lane pluggable optical module standard
On October 12, 2026, NVIDIA and Cisco announced the release of the first pluggable optical module standard, USFP, designed to support 400Gbps per lane high-speed signals. The USFP module, comparable in size to OSFP modules, initially integrates 16 full-duplex channels, with potential for expansion to 32 or more, enabling a throughput of 12.8 Tb/s. The module's bandwidth is four times that of existing 200G per lane pluggable modules, and its energy efficiency is 1.3 times higher.
The USFP employs a new two-dimensional array connector with a two-step insertion design, which connects high-speed contacts only after the module is inserted, reducing contact wear and improving signal integrity. It supports up to 100W power consumption, simplifying switch design. The collaboration marks a significant advancement in high-speed data transmission technology.
