Taiwan has indicted nine individuals, including an Nvidia senior manager and two Supermicro employees, for allegedly participating in a scheme to illegally export high-end AI servers to China. The indictment involves forging documents to conceal these exports, which violated U.S. export controls. Prosecutors in Keelung have not disclosed the names of the suspects but confirmed they are charged with breach of trust and document forgery. One suspect, connected to a related case, remains at large and is accused of siphoning funds from a distributor company involved in facilitating China's access to restricted Nvidia chips. Since 2022, the U.S. has mandated licenses for exporting semiconductors to China, aiming to protect national security and maintain a technological edge in the AI race. The investigation gained momentum after the U.S. arrested Supermicro co-founder Wally Liaw in March for allegedly channeling $2.5 billion in restricted AI servers to China since 2024. In response, Taiwan initiated a separate probe to gather more information on the scheme. The case highlights the complexities of enforcing export controls amid global competition in AI technology. The indictment underscores the potential for corporate and individual misconduct in circumventing these regulations, raising concerns about the security and integrity of sensitive technologies.
