Nvidia expands european AI investments with $2 billion boost
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang announced during his visit to Europe that the company plans to invest an additional $2 billion in the region, bringing its total investment in Europe over the past year to $80 billion. The investment includes funding for four French startups: Doctolib, Genesis AI, Pigment, and Entalpic. Huang emphasized the importance of open-source models in helping Europe compete with the U.S. in AI technology, noting that open models are more adaptable and cost-effective. He also highlighted Nvidia’s partnership with Mistral AI, which uses Nvidia’s Grace Blackwell chips to train its open-weight model, Le Chonk. The CEO met with French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss AI safety, open-source software, and Nvidia’s expansion in France. Public concerns over AI risks and environmental impact have led to calls for stricter regulations, prompting Europe to seek a role in shaping AI governance.
Huang stressed the need for Europe to participate in the global AI race, stating that the region must join the competition. Nvidia’s investments aim to accelerate AI adoption while reducing reliance on a few tech giants. The company has committed to investing thousands of billions globally to promote AI growth. The recent moves underscore Nvidia’s strategy to strengthen its presence in Europe through both direct investments and collaborations with local innovators.
