Open-source AI firms lead surge in tech acquisitions

Hugging Face + NvidiaSource: TechCrunch - AI28/08/2026, 17:12
Nvidia is reportedly finalizing a $13 billion acquisition of Hugging Face, a key platform for open-weight AI models. The deal comes amid a wave of investments in open-source AI, including a $6 billion agreement with Poolside and a $7 billion acquisition of OpenRouter by Stripe. These moves reflect a broader trend as companies seek to reduce reliance on major AI labs and control their own AI infrastructure. Nvidia aims to bolster its position in the AI chip market by acquiring Hugging Face, which hosts a vast developer community. The company also builds its own open-weight models, though adoption has been limited. Meanwhile, open models are gaining traction for cost-effective, high-volume tasks like customer service, according to Nik Albarran of Jellyfish. However, for complex tasks, proprietary models still dominate due to easier access and token subsidies. Fireworks, a leading open-weight model host, processes 40 trillion tokens daily, outpacing major competitors. Its CEO, Lin Qiao, argues that the future lies in specialized, company-specific models. As AI adoption grows, companies are increasingly considering self-hosting models to avoid rising costs from major labs.
