OpenAI adjusts funding goals amid AI market cooling
OpenAI has reduced its latest fundraising target by $100 billion, from $300 billion to $200 billion, according to a report by the Financial Times. The company now seeks funding at a valuation of approximately $1.25 trillion, down from a previously planned $1.4 trillion. The adjustment comes as tech stocks, particularly AI-focused ones, have declined, and concerns over the sustainability of AI infrastructure investments have grown. The Financial Times noted that OpenAI has set a deadline for investors to commit by Friday, but some have reduced their contributions, potentially leading to a lower initial funding amount.
The investment round, led by the UAE’s MGX fund, includes participation from firms like Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund, Coatue, Andreessen Horowitz, and SoftBank. OpenAI may also lease new computing power from the UAE. Meanwhile, its competitor Anthropic is expected to go public next month with a valuation potentially exceeding $1.5 trillion, drawing significant investor attention. Despite the reduced target, OpenAI’s capital needs remain substantial, with the company having already raised $1.22 trillion in March 2026.
