OpenAI has announced a $1 billion initiative to support frontline cyber defenders worldwide, focusing on enhancing their ability to protect essential services. The program, called Daybreak for Frontline Defenders, provides subsidized access to advanced AI tools, training, and technical assistance. The initiative targets organizations such as water and wastewater systems, electric grid operators, state and local governments, and community banks, which often face resource constraints. OpenAI aims to close security gaps before cyber threats escalate, emphasizing the need for immediate action as AI-enabled attacks are expected to grow in scale and complexity. The commitment builds on previous efforts, including $1 million in free API credits provided to U.S. water systems following recent attacks. The program also includes partnerships with entities like the Multi-State Information Sharing and Analysis Center (MS-ISAC) to train and support public-sector defenders. OpenAI’s goal is to ensure that frontier AI capabilities are accessible to all defenders, not just large enterprises, to safeguard critical infrastructure and services that millions rely on.
