OpenAI and gsa expand AI access for government agencies
OpenAI and the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) have announced a multi-year agreement to provide free access and 50% off usage for federal, state, local, and tribal governments. The deal builds on last year’s federal offer, offering $0 access to AI tools, which normally cost $15 per user per month. This initiative also extends to approximately 23 million public-sector workers, expanding eligibility beyond the current one million government employees with access to ChatGPT. OpenAI President Greg Brockman emphasized the importance of equipping public servants with advanced AI tools to protect critical systems and serve communities effectively.
The agreement includes expanded support for cyber defenders, granting verified government entities access to Daybreak Blue at 50% off standard pricing, along with training and technical assistance. Cyber defenders can also request Daybreak Red for advanced vulnerability research at standard commercial rates. This follows OpenAI’s recent announcement of a $1 billion global commitment to support frontline cyber defenders. The initiative aims to enhance public impact through AI by enabling government agencies to leverage the technology for faster, safer, and more reliable services.
