OpenAI and Peter Thiel’s Founders Fund have invested in Coherence Neuro, a startup developing brain implants to detect and treat cancer. The investment is part of a $45 million seed funding round, highlighting Big Tech’s growing interest in brain data. Coherence’s CEO, Ben Woodington, emphasized the synergy between AI labs and brain-computer interface companies, noting that AI can analyze vast neural datasets to optimize cancer treatments. Coherence is focused on decoding electrical signals linked to brain tumors, having already tested its implant in three patients during brain tumor surgery. The company plans to launch a clinical trial for glioblastoma patients and is developing implants for cancers in other body parts. OpenAI will not have access to Coherence’s data, unlike its collaboration with Merge Labs, where it shares scientific models to advance brain-computer interface research. Thiel’s firm has also supported Neuralink and CTRL-labs, which was acquired by Facebook. Woodington highlighted the potential of AI to interpret neural data, enabling real-time treatment through electrical stimulation of tumors.
