OpenAI challenges app store dominance with ai-driven platform
OpenAI unveiled a series of innovations during its Dev Day event, aiming to disrupt the traditional app store model by integrating apps directly into its ChatGPT platform. The company is transforming ChatGPT into a hub for app discovery, allowing users to launch and use applications within the chatbot interface. With 1.2 billion weekly users, ChatGPT will now suggest relevant apps during conversations, enabling seamless integration with existing tools. Developers can build AI-native apps through ChatGPT, similar to the open web or app stores, with support for interactive panels and plugins. OpenAI also introduced a new enterprise app marketplace, featuring over 30 partners including Adobe and Salesforce, allowing users to apply their OpenAI commitment toward approved services.
OpenAI’s autonomous AI agents, known as Dots, further enhance this ecosystem by performing tasks without user intervention, using cloud infrastructure and connected apps. These agents can proactively assist with projects or forgotten tasks, offering help with user approval. While OpenAI has not announced a billing system comparable to app stores, it emphasized building a discovery, distribution, and identity layer to challenge existing platforms. The initiative includes partnerships with 16 launch partners, including Cognition’s Devin and Notion, with plans to expand further.
