OpenAI expands AI tools for teens with college planning and learning aids
OpenAI announced new features for ChatGPT for Teens, including College Planner, a tool to help students manage college applications and financial aid. Available for US teens in grades 10–12, it will consolidate requirements, deadlines, and aid steps into one plan. OpenAI also announced support for the College Advising Corps, a nonprofit placing college graduates as advisers in under-resourced schools, to expand its reach and create an AI fellowship program.
In addition, OpenAI is enhancing learning tools with flashcards and quizzes generated from uploaded notes, aiming to improve study efficiency. The company is collaborating with Boston Children’s Hospital’s Digital Wellness Lab to establish a teen AI council, involving ~22 students working on digital wellbeing projects and AI chatbot development over the 2026–27 school year.
OpenAI emphasized the importance of teen input, stating teens will test tools and provide recommendations for product improvements. Usage data showed teens spend an average of 15 minutes daily on ChatGPT, with over 80% of longer sessions involving learning-related prompts.
