OpenAI expands safeguards for model access
OpenAI announced updated policies to ensure consistent safety standards across all services offering its models. The changes aim to provide developers and businesses with greater flexibility while maintaining robust safeguards. These policies, effective November 20, 2026, require partners providing access to OpenAI models to meet or exceed the company’s safety standards. OpenAI emphasized the importance of consistent enforcement across all platforms, including direct access through OpenAI, partner-hosted services, and reseller partners.
The company is also introducing SafetyIDs, which allow customers to identify end users without revealing their identities. This tool helps OpenAI respond to potential misuse more precisely. OpenAI stated it will continue to refine its approach to detecting and addressing misuse as models become more capable. The updated policies reflect a broader effort to balance innovation with responsibility, ensuring safe and ethical use of AI technologies.
