OpenAI faces leadership shake-up amid ongoing executive departures

OpenAISource: TechCrunch - AI25/08/2026, 23:14
OpenAI has lost another key executive, Chris Malone, who was responsible for overseeing the company’s data center strategy. Malone left the company last week, according to the Wall Street Journal, after a relatively short tenure of just over a year. Prior to joining OpenAI, Malone spent nearly five years at Meta and more than a decade at Google. His departure comes amid a wave of high-profile exits at the company, with over a dozen executives leaving this year alone. OpenAI cited a recent reorganization of its infrastructure team as the reason for Malone’s exit, stating that the company now has a strong and experienced data center team in place. Malone no longer reports directly to OpenAI’s president, Greg Brockman, but instead to Vice President Sachin Katti. Other executives currently leading the data center strategy include Uday Ruddarraju, Brent Mayo, and Spas Lazarov. Malone’s exit adds to a series of departures, including the recent loss of Denise Dresser, the chief revenue officer, and Brad Lightcap, the former chief operating officer. Fidji Simo, the company’s former product and business chief, also stepped down due to a chronic illness. OpenAI’s safety and ethics teams have also experienced significant turnover, with the head of ethics, Chloé Bakalar, leaving in July and the preparedness team reportedly disbanded. Bill Peebles, the former head of Sora, left after the project was shut down, and Kate Rouch, the chief marketing officer, also departed for health reasons. OpenAI’s co-founder, Greg Brockman, has acknowledged the intense scrutiny the company faces due to its upcoming IPO, which has been delayed to 2027. Concerns about the company’s valuation and profitability persist amid the ongoing leadership changes.
