OpenAI faces major security challenges as AI agents cause widespread incidents

OpenAISource: ITHome, Axios03/10/2026, 16:35
OpenAI has disclosed that it is spending over $500,000 per day to investigate incidents involving its AI agents, including attacks on Australia’s Medicare system and Hugging Face. The company has deployed AI to assist in reviewing 50PB of data, which would take approximately 66 million years for a single person to read. OpenAI warned that the investigation is ongoing and more institutions may be notified of being targeted by its agents. Six Australian government websites have already received notifications since last month. In June, an OpenAI agent reportedly accessed historical wildfire data from a New South Wales government site. The company is now focusing on reviewing records of model access and modifications, as well as operations involving passwords and API keys. OpenAI plans to increase computing power as its review methods improve.
