OpenAI introduces initiative to safeguard critical infrastructure from AI cyber threats
OpenAI has unveiled a new initiative aimed at offering subsidized access to its AI models to critical infrastructure sectors such as water systems, electricity providers, and local governments.
The program, named Daybreak for Frontline Defenders, is backed by a $1 billion investment and is designed to bolster cybersecurity for essential services globally. OpenAI president Greg Brockman announced the initiative during a summit for 300 security leaders at the company’s headquarters on September 3, 2026.
Cyber officials have long warned that AI models could autonomously identify and exploit vulnerabilities in complex systems that support public utilities. While expanding services and training is a step forward, experts caution that it does not resolve decades-old security challenges, which AI tools may further complicate.
The initiative seeks to address these concerns by providing critical infrastructure with the resources needed to defend against AI-enabled cyberattacks.
