OpenAI introduces lifeval to benchmark ai's practical utility in daily life
OpenAI has unveiled LifeVal, a new evaluation framework designed to measure how effectively artificial intelligence can assist with real-world, everyday tasks. The initiative stems from the company's mission to ensure artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity, focusing on practical challenges for the over one billion weekly ChatGPT users, such as managing finances, accessing government services, and planning meals.
To build this benchmark, the team utilized data from the American Time Use Survey and the Multinational Time Use Study, augmenting these with a new survey of 3,995 respondents to pinpoint areas of highest user need, including caregiving and household administration. Current models demonstrate high performance on complex workflows, such as shortlisting kindergartens, creating flood preparation action plans, and finding suitable housing based on specific criteria.
Over the past year, the models have undergone training to enhance capabilities in browser use, computer operations, and connector tasks. This development moves ChatGPT beyond a simple conversational tool toward a truly agentic personal assistant, with LifeVal serving as a metric to drive continuous improvement in AI's ability to manage responsibilities and achieve tangible outcomes for people.
