OpenAI introduces locked chats for enhanced privacy in ChatGPT
OpenAI has introduced a new feature called Locked Chats for ChatGPT, allowing users to secure sensitive conversations with a four-digit PIN, Face ID, or Touch ID. This feature is designed for situations where users want to keep personal or private discussions confidential when sharing their device with others. Unlike Temporary Chats, Locked Chats can be accessed at any time and are stored separately in a dedicated section. OpenAI emphasized that Locked Chats do not provide end-to-end encryption or a separate encrypted vault, and they do not affect how long chats are retained or the 'Improve the model for everyone' setting. Resetting the PIN permanently deletes all locked content. The feature is available on most ChatGPT plans but not on the Healthcare version. It is rolling out starting on 2026-10-20 and may not be available to all users immediately.
The Locked Chats section has its own memory, which is shared across conversations within the section but does not affect regular Memory. New messages in locked chats do not leak into regular chats. The feature is not available for temporary, archived, group, or shared link chats. OpenAI also noted that it does not change how sensitive information is stored or handled. The addition of Locked Chats adds another layer of privacy to ChatGPT as its use for personal conversations grows.
