OpenAI launches codex plugin for creating game boy style games
On September 30, 2026, during the 2026 Developer Day event, OpenAI partnered with ModRetro to unveil a new plugin for its Codex AI tool, enabling users to create Game Boy-style games using natural language. The plugin, named Game Studio, integrates with ModRetro's Chromatic retro handheld console, which resembles the Game Boy Color in design and features. Chromatic includes a custom LCD, aluminum casing, and compatibility with original Game Boy and Game Boy Color cartridges, as well as support for user-created games.
Game Studio allows developers to describe game concepts in natural language, with Codex assisting in generating the necessary code. The tool includes a built-in Chromatic emulator for testing games on a computer before streaming them to the physical device. Users can then write the final program onto a dedicated Chromatic cartridge, which can run user-made games when paired with an empty cartridge.
