OpenAI launches office suite features to compete with Microsoft

OpenAI has unveiled new features designed to rival Microsoft's workplace software, marking a significant shift in its strategy. At its Dev Day conference in San Francisco on September 28, 2026, the company introduced Space, a collaborative workspace within ChatGPT where users can work with AI agents called Dots. CEO Sam Altman described Space as a dynamic environment where pages and files coexist, allowing users to give specific instructions to pages, such as updating them with information from team channels. Complementing Space, OpenAI launched Pages, a word processor aimed at fostering collaboration between humans and AI agents. It also introduced collaborative slides, which can be created through voice commands and edited by multiple users and agents. These tools position OpenAI as a direct competitor to Google Docs, Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint. As OpenAI expands into workplace software, Microsoft and other companies like Salesforce are also integrating AI into their offerings. Over the past year, these firms have released numerous AI products to stay competitive in the evolving tech landscape.
