OpenAI plans to revive Sora as a professional film tool
On October 12, 2026, The Information reported that OpenAI is in talks with a stealth startup focused on AI video technology for film production.
The startup, founded by Hollywood producer Jeffrey Katzenberg, former Sora research lead Bill Peebles, and former Dropbox CFO Sujay Jaswa, aims to acquire and redevelop the previously discontinued Sora platform. The startup plans to develop and sell software or services for film production using Sora's technology.
OpenAI had halted Sora's development and its TikTok-like video app in early 2026 due to resource reallocation toward enterprise AI and programming tools. Sora's consumer-facing platform and web interface were already shut down, and OpenAI ended a $1 billion deal with Disney.
Details about the startup's access to Sora's model weights remain unclear, and the terms of the collaboration are yet to be finalized.
