OpenAI postpones IPO amid safety priorities

OpenAISource: Ars Technica - AI30/09/2026, 14:59
OpenAI has postponed its initial public offering (IPO) until it can ensure "confident safety decisions," according to CEO Sam Altman. The company faces a new lawsuit over its tools allegedly hacking a third party. Altman emphasized that while delaying the IPO could be "bad for the world," the $852 billion startup will not rush into the market amid rapid AI advancements. "We’re going to prioritize the mission and safety and making sure that we can very confidently scale to the next stage of AI without people debating what percentage chance we’re going to do all these bad things in the world," Altman stated during the company’s annual developer day on Tuesday. The decision reflects OpenAI’s focus on ethical AI development and risk mitigation ahead of its potential public listing.
