OpenAI reverses plan to cut ChatGPT pro usage limits amid user backlash
On October 29, 2026, OpenAI announced it would immediately increase the usage limits for ChatGPT Pro and Business Premium subscriptions, doubling the quotas for Pro 100, Pro 200, and Pro 500 tiers. This decision came after users strongly opposed a previous plan to reduce Pro 200 limits by 50%, which was announced on September 29, 2026.
The original plan, which aimed to transition existing users to lower limits by October 29, 2026, was criticized as unfair since it would not change subscription prices but reduce service benefits.
OpenAI clarified that it will not lower the usage limits for Pro 100, Pro 200, Pro 500, or Business Premium, and that the Dots AI assistant’s usage will be calculated separately. New subscribers will receive the updated limits, while existing users will automatically benefit without needing to renew.
OpenAI also noted that doubling the limits does not guarantee double the output, as results depend on model efficiency, task complexity, and usage mode. Fast mode consumes usage at 2.5 times the standard rate, while Ultrafast mode uses 8 times more.
