OpenAI has launched a comprehensive initiative to support the journalism ecosystem, focusing on education and professional development. The program begins with graduate students and faculty at CUNY’s Newmark J-School and Northwestern University’s Medill School, offering over 400 ChatGPT Edu subscriptions for the 2026–2027 academic year. Gina Chua, Executive Director of the Tow-Knight Center, emphasized the importance of preparing students for the transformative role of AI in journalism. Jeremy Gilbert, Medill Professor, highlighted the need for equitable access to AI tools. Tom Rubin, Chief of Intellectual Property and Content at OpenAI, noted the expansion of OpenAI’s commitment to journalism education. The initiative builds on previous efforts, including a 2023 grant to NYU’s Arthur L. Carter Journalism Institute. OpenAI has also engaged with journalists at various conferences, providing training and resources to enhance AI integration in newsrooms. These collaborations aim to ensure AI is used responsibly and effectively in journalism.
