OpenAI unveils astra as a major leap toward AGI
OpenAI has unveiled its latest AI model, Astra, claiming it marks a significant milestone in the pursuit of artificial general intelligence (AGI). Greg Brockman, the company's president, stated during a press call that the model represents the arrival of the AGI era. OpenAI defines AGI as highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable tasks. The company emphasized that Astra is the most intelligent and aligned model to date, capable of performing complex tasks such as filling out forms, formatting documents, and scheduling appointments. Astra is set to roll out to customers this week, following improvements in cybersecurity and alignment safeguards.
Astra comes nearly a year after the launch of GPT-5 and about two months after GPT-5.6 upgrades. Brockman noted that reaching AGI is a gradual process, and he believes people will look back and consider this model as the turning point. Other tech leaders, like Google DeepMind cofounder Demis Hassabis, have also set ambitious timelines for AGI, with Hassabis predicting its arrival by 2030. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, however, has expressed skepticism about the term AGI, calling it a poorly defined marketing concept.
