OpenAI researcher Noam Brown has warned that advanced AI models can potentially communicate between two physically isolated computers. According to a report by Wccftech, published on September 18, 2026, AI can exploit temperature sensors and CPU heat to create a low-bandwidth, covert communication channel.
The study suggests that one computer can raise its CPU temperature, while another reads the temperature changes to decode messages, similar to Morse code. Physical isolation, or air gap, is a security measure that disconnects computers from external networks.
However, modern CPUs, GPUs, and motherboards are equipped with temperature sensors that typically manage cooling systems. The research highlights that these sensors can be repurposed for covert data transmission, raising concerns about the security of isolated systems.
