Openai's data center leadership changes raise concerns amid expansive infrastructure plans

OpenAI recently announced the departure of Chris Malone, who had been overseeing the company's data center expansion since March 2025. Malone's exit follows a reorganization within the company, during which he was moved from reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman to a technical engineering team under VP Sachin Katti. His departure marks the second leadership change in the data center division within 18 months, as OpenAI continues to navigate the complexities of its massive infrastructure projects. The company's Stargate data center initiative, launched in partnership with SoftBank and Oracle, was initially highlighted with a high-profile Oval Office event featuring prominent figures including Sam Altman, Masayoshi Son, and Larry Ellison. OpenAI's data center strategy has evolved significantly, shifting from reliance on third-party cloud services to owning its own infrastructure, and now back to leasing entire data center facilities. In July, the company raised its projected compute budget to $750 billion through 2030, up from $600 billion. OpenAI has also signed a 10-gigawatt data center lease in Ohio with SB Energy, which is partly backed by an Nvidia financial guarantee. The company's leadership changes come as it continues to invest heavily in its infrastructure, with future payments expected to approach its own valuation. Uday Ruddarraju was promoted to chief technology officer of computing capacity, while Brent Mayo was placed in charge of project scheduling. OpenAI remains far from profitability and is preparing for an IPO next year, despite the exorbitant costs associated with its data center operations.
